He was the co-inventor of the popular confectionery snack, known as, "Cracker Jacks." He emigrated to the United States from Germany in 1869. He worked as a farmhand outside of Chicago. He also sold popcorn. He founded the Cracker Jacks, popcorn business just after the Great Chicago Fire.
